Family Medicine Residency

Welcome Letter

Dear Future Family Medicine Physician,

Carri Jo Timmer, DO 1This summer, we proudly celebrate the graduation of our 9th class of board-certified Family Medicine physicians-each one a reflection of our mission: to educate physicians to provide the highest quality healthcare with compassionate and accessible service for all.

Or, as we like to say, we simply “put the patient first.”

Our patients are more than those we care for-they are our teachers, partners, and inspiration. As medicine evolves, so do we. Here, lifelong learning isn’t a buzzword-it’s a way of being. You’ll be surrounded by mentors and peers who challenge and support one another, fostering a vibrant learning environment that’s adaptable, rigorous, and deeply human.

Our program prepares you to become the physician you envision. Whether your dream includes full-scope OB with surgical privileges, managing inpatient care across the lifespan, or cultivating continuity in outpatient family medicine, we are here to give you the tools to build a fulfilling and meaningful career.

And there’s no better place to do it than Tacoma. It’s a city that balances urban vibrance with small-town warmth. You’ll find panoramic views of Mount Rainier outside your clinical windows, serene waterways perfect for kayaking or reflection, and countless trails and forests beckoning you to explore. Oh, and did we mention the largest octopus in the world lives just beneath our iconic Tacoma Narrows Bridge? You’ll soon understand why it has become a beloved symbol in our community and our program.

We know how important the learning environment culture is to your residency experience. Family Medicine is more than a specialty-it’s a calling grounded in connection. When you join us, you join a family. And we embrace you with all eight octopus arms (yes, arms-not tentacles!) –Togetherness, Empowerment, Nurture, Trust, Adaptability, Courage, Loyalty, and Empathy. Just like our favorite cephalopod, you’ll discover how to navigate multiple responsibilities with precision, curiosity, and grace.

We’re excited you’re considering joining our family. Let’s embark on this journey together with many hearts, many arms, and one shared purpose.

Sincerely,

Carri Jo Timmer, DO Program Director
