On Tuesday October 9th we gathered more than 450 guests for an evening of good food, great friends, and inspiration from some of our community leaders. We had a heartwarming evening as we honored James L. Walton with the Kimi and George Tanbara, M.D. Humanitarian Award. The evening was led by our wonderful master of ceremonies T’wina Nobles, President and CEO of the Tacoma Urban League.
We heard from some of Jim’s closest friends and colleagues, including speakers from organizations like Tacoma Community College, The Black Collective, and Shilo Baptist Church. Each speaker shined a light on a different facet of Jim. By the end of the evening we all felt enlightened by the inspiring story of Jim’s life.
It was clear that while the audience was touched by these kind words, it was our honoree who felt truly moved. In his acceptance speech Jim gave many thanks to those who shared stories about his experiences. He took time to honor his wife, his mother, and his faith as the forces that drove him to “be a servant” to others. Through the emotion in his voice and the sincerity of his words, we all felt that we were listening to Jim’s heart.
The award dinner was a truly special evening, one that will live on in those who attended. Hopefully we will all continue to nurture our own humanitarian spirits like Kimi and George Tanbara, and Jim Walton.
