Community Health Care Launches the Kimi & George Tanbara, MD Endowment Fund for Patient Care – September 2018
– by Rick Oldenburg, CAP
Dr. George Tanbara and his wife Kimi were remarkably loving and generous individuals. Their concern for community, and willingness to support healthcare for the poorer members of our society, is legendary.
Dr. Tanbara and his entire family began a free clinic on both the Hilltop and Salishan areas of Tacoma in 1969 when the Urban Coalition acted to offer basic healthcare to the poor.
The Tanbara’s work with children was extraordinary. Whether treating them at Pediatrics Northwest, in the two free clinics, by teaching tennis or working through the Tacoma Buddhist Temple, the Tanbara’s left their humanitarian handprints all over the city and county.
The family of Kimi and George have given their blessing for, and the Community Health Care Board of Directors has authorized, creation of the
Kimi & George Tanbara, MD Endowment Fund. For half a century George was the light that illuminated the need for, and the work of, Community Health Care’s Doctors. This Endowment Fund is a fitting and proper way to forever honor the legacy of Kimi and George in Pierce County.
Individuals and organizations wishing to contribute to the Tanbara Endowment Fund, may do so at any time. Cash contributions are welcome as well as asset transfers of appreciated stock or, in some cases, Real Estate. Those 70 ½ or older with large IRAs, may want to utilize the Qualified Charitable Distribution (sometimes called Charitable Rollover) to meet Minimum Distribution Requirements without recognizing the distribution as income.
More and more, people are choosing to include Community Health Care in their Wills and Estate Plans. Bequests of any size can be added to the Permanent Endowment Fund. In addition, bequests over $25,000 are able to begin a Named Endowment Fund if agreement is signed in advance (ex. The John Smith Endowment for Patient Care.)
