Is Community Health Care a government agency?
No, Community Health Care is registered with Washington State as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit business. Stewardship is provided by a 21 member Board of community volunteers and patients.
Are Providers (doctors/dentists) volunteers, part-time or full-time employees?
All of our medical and dental providers are employees of Community Health Care. Most work full-time but some work only part-time due to the program in which they work.
What happens if a patient needs a specialist?
For insured patients, a referral is made by the patient’s physician and the cost is paid through the patient’s insurance.
What happens if a patient needs surgery?
Like most doctors’ offices, minor surgery can be performed at the medical office. If the need is beyond those services, then patients are referred to the appropriate medical facility.
How many doctors and/or providers?
Currently there are 42 providers. These include Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Dentists and Hygienists.
Do people choose their doctor?
Yes, people choose their doctor/dentist from any one of our 32 medical providers or 17 dental providers. Our medical and dental providers offer a wide range of abilities and experiences and patients choose the one that is right for them. Eighteen of our providers speak a second language including twelve who speak Spanish.
What if a patient needs a nursing home?
Our Outreach Staff works with the patient to find an affordable nursing home.
How many employees?
Community Health Care currently has over 300 employees.
What insurance do the clinics accept?
Community Health Care accepts many private insurance plans as well as Medicare and medical coupons. Call your clinic to see if your insurance is one we work with.
Is Community Health Care an walk-in facility?
No, Community Health Care provides primary medical and dental services for our patients and their families. Our goal is to be our patient’s family doctor. However, we accomodate the urgent needs of established patients with a referal only urgent care clinic and our dental clinics are available for urgent care visits on a walk-in basis.
How many uninsured in Pierce County?
According to the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department about 100,000 individuals do not have health insurance and 300,000 do not have dental insurance. This is out of a population of 740,957 according to the US Census Bureau. These numbers are growing as people become unemployed and as companies reduce benefits offered to employees. Community Health Plan of Washington studies found that 57% of the uninsured are employed. Community Health Care is one of the few organizations in Pierce County that provides medical services on a sliding fee scale.
